58% of Americans Unsure What “Pay as You Drive” Insurance Is

A survey by Insurance Quotes.com and Princeton Survey Research Associates International found that Of the 1,000 consumers surveyed, 37 percent said they would never consider pay-as-you-drive auto insurance and an additional 35 percent said they would require premium discounts of 25 percent or more to make the switch.

For example, while 35 percent knew that drinking and driving is not tracked by UBI devices, 68 percent of 18- to 29-year-olds mistakenly believe that drinking and driving is tracked. Fifty-eight percent of consumers also either incorrectly said pay-as-you-drive programs don’t track when you drive, or weren’t sure. On the other hand, 37 percent knew that hard braking is tracked, and 42 percent knew that the time of day they drive is tracked.

NICB Releases Most Stolen Compact & Sub-Compact List

The National Insurance Crime Bureau released the next in its catalog of vehicle theft reports, this one on “Compact and Subcompact” vehicles. The report is based on National Crime Information Center (NCIC) vehicle theft records for 2010, 2011 and 2012.

The top 10 most stolen vehicle types are – Toyota Corolla, Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Nissan Versa, Nissan Snetra, Hyundai Elantra, Mazda 3, Toyota Yaris, Volkswagen Jetta, Kia Forte. Source – National insurance Crime Bureau (NICB).

Telematics will Drive 100 Million Policies by 2020

Insurance telematics is increasingly common globally and there will be more than 100 million policies, generating more than $68 billion in premiums by 2020, according to “Usage-Based Insurance Global Study 2013,” from Ptolemus Consulting Group. Insurance telematics, also called usage-based insurance (UBI), programs now are being rolled out in Australia, Canada and India, and soon will be available in Latin America and Russia, Ptolemus said.

Progressive has doubled the number of UBI customers to 1.4 million. There now are seven insurers/brokers with more than 100,000 telematics customers, three of which are in the United States and four of which area in Europe.

JD Power Releases New Auto Claims Satisfaction Data

Customer satisfaction with auto insurance claims handling is improving, due in large part to insurers’ improvements in managing the first notice of loss (FNOL) process and providing faster payments to claimants, according to the J.D. Power 2013 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study.

The 2013 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study is based on responses from more than 11,500 auto insurance customers who settled a claim within the past 6 months. The study excludes claimants whose vehicle incurred only glass/windshield damage or was stolen, or who only filed roadside assistance claims. Survey data was collected between December 2012 and September 2013.

While personal auto insurance is a relatively low-touch category, claims handling is an area where insurers can make a big impact on customer satisfaction in a relatively short period of time,” said Jeremy Bowler, senior director of the global insurance practice at J.D. Power.
