Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, October 01, 2014

Bain: Few P&C outfits Excel at Attracting and Keeping New Customers. When it comes to building new business, the property/casualty insurance industry has split in two. Some companies in the marketplace are great at acquiring customers; others are brilliant at retaining them. Few successfully accomplish both, Bain & Co. has concluded in a new report.

“Very few carriers excel in both acquisition and retention,” Bain analysts David Whelan and Sean O’Neill wrote in their report on customer loyalty in the P/C industry, which is based on a survey of nearly 26,500 U.S. P/C consumers and 3,600 auto insurance consumers.

Mobile Services Can Help Insurers Increase Revenues

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, September 24, 2014

Mobile now mission critical. Mobile services can help insurers increase revenues, decrease loss expenses and reduce risk, according to “Make The Business Case For Mobile Insurance,” a white paper by Ellen Carney at Forrester Research. However, justifying the expense of app creation, aligning the mobile business case to organizational priorities and setting realistic expectations for costs and risks, are critical to their success, Carney says.

Mobile strategy has gone from being an app that could be built on the cheap by college kids to being a major line item in many insurance companies’ digital and technology management budgets,” Carney said. “With departments with long wish lists vying for finite budget and resource allocations, mobile insurance teams want more funding but need to justify their planned mobile spending with sound business cases.”

Automakers Race to Be First with Driverless Cars

Joseph Coupal - Friday, September 19, 2014

Automakers race to be first with driverless cars. Nissan Motor Co. will introduce cars that park themselves by 2016, Chief Executive Officer Carlos Ghosn said, as the Japanese carmaker rushes to be among the first to offer automated driving.

The feature, along with technology enabling cars to autonomously navigate congested highways, will be available in a wide range of vehicles, Ghosn told reporters today in Tokyo. Two years later, the company plans to offer vehicles that can change lanes automatically, and by 2020, they’ll be able to handle intersections on their own, he said.

Getting an Attorney After an Accident Gets You Less Money

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, September 10, 2014

Apparently getting an attorney after an accident gets you less money! Get in an accident, call an attorney. Then call your auto insurance company.

More often than not, that is how things are going these days, according to a report from the Insurance Research Council (IRC), released Tuesday, that found that the percentage of personal injury claimants in auto cases represented by attorneys rose to 36% in 2012, more than double the rate in 1977, and up from 31% in 2007. For bodily injury claimants, the rate rose slightly to 50%.

“The attorney involvement trends shown in this study undercut two of the envisioned benefits of no-fault auto injury systems: a less adversarial settlement process and more timely payments,” said Elizabeth Sprinkel, senior vice president of the IRC. “The role of attorneys is implicated in many of the factors driving up the cost of auto insurance.”

According to the report, claimants who were represented by attorneys were "much more likely" to receive medical treatment for their injuries, were more likely "to be involved in apparent claim abuse," and received lower net payments on average than those who did not hire attorneys.
